State Special Education Requirements Should NOT Be Permitted to be Waived? An Information and Discussion Forum for Parents, Educators and Other Special Education Stakeholders

As part of the NYS budget approval process, proposed legislation would allow School Districts, private schools and BOCES to seek a waiver of certain State-imposed special education requirements. Any School District seeking a waiver would be required to notify parents and include any parent comments in an application to the NYS Commissioner of Education. The Commissioner would be authorized to grant one-year waivers. Waivers have the potential of significantly impacting State requirements related to evaluation of students, delivery of special education, behavior assessment and interventions, and transition to adulthood. This Forum will provide an overview of the legislative proposal and perspectives from a school attorney and a parent/student attorney. Facilitated discussion will follow. The goal is for participants to become better informed and enabled to offer comment to the legislature.
